With the collapse of the Soviet Union， hence the closing of the Cold War， international community has undergone a fundamental change in terms of the nature and complexity of global power relations. Resurgent nationalism and ethnicity， rise of challenging non-state actors， emerging economic powerhouses and its concomitant political clout， all of which have challenged validity and adequacy of prevailing theories of international relations. This course is designed to introduce graduate students to some of the conceptual understandings of impinging global issues， and more importantly， to practical complexities of international relations. Anyone who is interested in making sense of global affairs， and in forming intelligent opinions is welcome. The course starts off with a commonly debated topic Is the American era over？， in which the issues of globalization and changing balance of power is examined. Then we will explore limits and possibilities of some of the prevailing theories on international relations with as much historical and contemporary case studies as possible. The course concludes with area studies on contemporary China and Japan with specific emphasis on interaction between domestic and international environments. |
