The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with phenomena surrounding culture under the conditions of globalization, and controversies regarding the influences of globalization on culture(s). It provides students theoretical tools to approach and analyze some of the dilemmas brought on by cultural globalization. The course first introduces the academic concepts of culture and sociological theories and methods to analyze cultural objects, meanings and practices. It then introduces the key concepts that are often seen as characterizing cultural globalization. Finally, it identifies areas where globalization has had major cultural impacts on social life. Throughout the course we engage the following questions: What do we refer to when we talk about culture in social science? How are cultural objects, cultural meanings and cultural practices created, produced, consumed and transformed? What does culture matter? How does culture affect action? What is globalization and why does it matter to culture? What are some of the central concerns in the globalization of culture? How can we approach the globalization of culture from a sociological perspective? |
