From this class, I got a general understanding of the mechanism and diseases which are related to the cell stress response signals. A lot of factors could be the stress sources for the cell, such as acidification, osmotic pressure, UV light, heat, gravity and so on. Also, there are many pathways for a cell to response to the stressful stimulus, which could help the cell to defend against and recover from the damage. I think the cellular stress responses can be classified into groups like the heat shock response, the unfolded protein response (UPR), the DNA damage response, the response to oxidative stress and so on. The protective responses like unfolded protein response or heat shock response were verified to mediate an increase in chaperone protein activity which enhances the protein folding capacity of the cell, thus counteracting the stress and promoting cell survival. If this recovery is failed, the apoptosis will be activated to eliminate the damaged cells from the organism. Furthermore, these cellular stress responses are tightly linked to a lot of diseases. Such as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disorder which is mainly caused by superoxide dismutase (SOD1) via provoking the ER stress and some other mechanisms. So, if we get a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of these response, I think we could even control these responses. And further achieve new drug discovery based on the molecular targeted treatment approaches. |
