The one-term seminar style intensive course of ITASIA 125 provides comparative perspectives for the understanding of the political, social and cultural significance of social inequality in South and East Asia. The course particularly focuses on issues relating to the ideas and practices of ‘untouchability’ in India and Japan and explores its religious dimensions. Students will gain a basic understanding of discrimination in both historical and contemporary Asian societies. They will be covering important academic debates and contributions from the diverse disciplines of history, sociology, anthropology, and literature/film studies. They will also watch films on the topic and make a museum trip in order to broaden their insights and understanding. By the end of the course will have developed a strong theoretical framework with which to interpret, compare and contrast multiple aspects of social inequality in Asian societies. |
