The course program consists of exercise in subtitling process, critical analysis and evaluation of professional (good and bad) samples of subtitling (i.e. subtitled audiovisual material) regarding linguistic and technical issues, and written assignment for the audiovisual material in the campus library, supplemented by a discussion regarding the subtitling process, problematic (translation and technical) issues encountered, strategies employed to overcome them, justification of choices made, and an overall evaluation of the students’own work. Students are expected to learn how to present the message (one or two lines), how to break the lines in the case of two line subtitles, how to make decision on what information to include and what to leave out, and what cultural adjustments, if any, need to be made. |
