This is an English based course, which focuses on an interdisciplinary study of the dynamic transformation of Japan since Kaikoku (the Opening of Japan) with the arrival of Commodore Perry. Exploring multimedia and internet resources along with conventional sources, students will investigate the way in which globalization processes have affected modern Japanese development at the international, national, organizational, institutional levels, and private domain. It will cover major issues concerning Japan’s modernization, militarism, defeat, reconstruction, rapid economic growth, the establishment of democratic government, and external relations as well as internationalization of society, culture, education and business in the age of globalization. Most sessions are based on lectures and class room discussion. They are supplemented by extra documentary and other visual productions as well as by field study to Kobe. Many documentaries and other visual materials are presented. Active participation in all of them is essential. Students who fail to attend more than 20% of the classes will have ’Fail’ in KGU’s grading system. |
