This paper provides an introduction to information systems and information technology architecture used in the modern organisations. It explores the nature, functions, purpose, and control goals of information systems, networks, and communication technology. It discusses the reasons for using external and internal sources of hardware and software, and accountants’ involvement in the selection of software and hardware, such as relative advantages/disadvantages of renting, leasing, and purchasing computer hardware. It introduces a system development life cycle that comprises the steps undertaken to create or modify information systems to respond to changes in the organisational goals, processes, or structure. I t also provides exposure to the use of relational database management, and spreadsheet applications to solve real life business problems. |
