In this advanced course, students will gain a theoretical understanding of some aspects of lexicology, including lexical semantics (the study of word meaning), word frequency, and word collocation patterns, and then see how this can be applied to the creation of materials for language study, such as dictionaries, thesauruses, textbooks, and on-line study materials. This class meets two times per week. One session per week will be held in a regular classroom, where we will discuss theoretical issues. If the class size is not too large, students will also take turns to present some of their work in these sessions. The second session will meet in a computer classroom, where students can get a hands-on opportunity to work with electronic materials. During the semester, students will write reviews of some of the materials for language study, describing the theoretical basis upon which they were developed, and judging their likely usefulness for language learners. There will also be some assignments in which students will find or create their own materials and share them their with their classmates. The class will mainly focus on materials for English study, but there will be opportunities to investigate materials for the study of Japanese and other languages of interest to the students. |
